Why painting is different in Brooklyn
Most of Brooklyn was built before 1978, and much of it before 1930. Walls are plaster, ceilings are tall and trim is thick with old paint, so preparation takes more time than the painting. Old paint may contain lead. Federal rules and New York City's Local Law 1 set out how it must be handled when it is disturbed.
The rules here are local too. Home improvement contractors need a license from the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. Painting needs no building permit, but on a landmark building or in a historic district a change of exterior color needs approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. How we work
It starts with a free estimate. We look at the surfaces with you and send a written quote that lists what is included. Surface prep is part of the job: patching, sanding, caulking and priming. Most interior rooms take one to two days. A full exterior usually takes three to five days, depending on weather.
