These are the questions Brooklyn owners, tenants and building managers ask us most often, with short answers. They cover price, the city license, permits and landmark rules, lead paint, timing and the season for outside work. Our guide pages go deeper on each topic. How much does it cost to paint a room in Brooklyn?
By national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, painting one room costs $300 to $1,000 on average. Those are not our quotes. Ceiling height, plaster repairs, trim and access set your price, and we give it in writing after a free estimate.
Do painters need a license in New York City?
Yes. Home improvement work over $200 on a residential building needs a Home Improvement Contractor license from the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. The Brooklyn Painting Company is licensed and insured.
Do I need a permit to paint my house in Brooklyn?
No. The Department of Buildings lists painting among the work that needs no permit. On a landmark building or in a historic district, changing the exterior color needs a Landmarks Preservation Commission permit first.
My building is old. What about lead paint?
Assume it is there in any home built before 1978. Paid work that disturbs old paint must follow the federal EPA lead-safe rule, and New York City's Local Law 1 adds duties for landlords. Our lead paint page explains both.
When can you paint outside in Brooklyn?
Roughly May through October. Exterior paint needs a dry wall and mild air for hours after it goes on. Interior painting is done all year.
How long does a paint job take?
Most interior rooms take one to two days. A full exterior usually takes three to five days, depending on weather.
